I really don't even know what to think of the first day of school. In ways, it can be exciting, and actually quite fun. You're going back to something so familiar, yet so new. You wonder who's changed, and what everyone's wearing. Some people look at coming back to school as "seeing everyone they avoided in the summer", but I like seeing everyone again. I mean, I'm definitely not saying I like everyone in our school, but it's nice just to see people you hadn't seen for months. It's like a nice way of just catching up with everyone. But somehow, the first day manages to be really boring, and pretty depressing. After three months of doing whatever you wanted, you're suddenly thrown back into a routine. Honestly, I don't even keep track of what day it is in the summer. And then, before you even know it, you're starting school the next day. That day ends up being so long. First off, you've gotten up ridiculously early. Then once you begin your classes, it's just the same thing, 6 times. "You'll need a notebook", "You are only to write with a pencil in my class", "no cellphones", "you need your parents to sign this and bring it back to me tomorrow". I'm not blaming the teachers, or trying to make fun of them, it's just a lot to handle and take in. Plus, going back to high school is not the same as going back to elementary school. Instead of just needing your parents to sign things, you have actual homework, how rough is that? I guess you could look at it as an early start, and that it will help you get back into routine, but personally, I think getting out of bed at 6:30 is a good enough start. Oh well, it's always going to be a negative perspective on the first day. It can only get better, right?

Over the summer, I engaged myself in a new found activity. I am an official member of the local Civil Air Patrol flight. CAP is an auxiliary branch of the United States Air Force. Through this program, I will be provided with the opportunity to learn new skills, develop proper military etiquette, and improve my chances of a successful future. We are instructed in a wide range of subjects such as: astronomy, aeronautics, avionics, basic flight instruction, search and rescue techniques, rocketry, and many others. Since I am highly considering a military career in the future, I am extremely glad for this opportunity. I have been issued Battle Dress Uniform fatigues, BDUs, and a basic set of the USAF’s dress blues. I can progress through the training and instruction and improve my rank. Right now I stand as a Cadet Basic Airman, the lowest of the low. In order to rank up, I must pass a leadership and physical training test for each rank. I hope to steadily advance to officer ranks.

My summer was one of the best ones that I have ever had. Since I am Latin, I get something called a quinceañera. Instead of having a sweet sixteen I got a sweet 15. I got to decide if I wanted a trip of my choosing or a big party. I wanted the trip. My options for a trip were Brazil, Barcelona, or Hawaii. I decided on Hawaii. We ended up going for eight days. Hawaii is one of the prettiest places I have ever been. First my family and I went to Maui. Our resort was right on the beach. On the first day we got there, my brother, dad, and I went snorkeling right off the beach. We got to see and swim with wild sea turtles. It was amazing. We even took pictures! The fish were all different outstanding colors that popped right off the coral. My brother and I got surf lessons right on the beach. Getting to learn how to surf has always been a dream of mine and I finally got to fulfill that dream. In Maui, my family and I also went zip lining over valleys which overlooked the beautiful pacific ocean. Probably one of the most fun things we did in Maui was the Road to Hana. It was an all day ordeal. My mom, dad, brother and I drove around the whole island of Maui in our white Jeep. We would stop at different places such as waterfalls, graves, national parks, pools, black sand beaches, and much more along the way. The drive was the longest drive of my life, but it definitely is not an experience I will ever forget. On our last day on the island of Maui we took a catamaran out to two different bays and snorkeled there. While snorkeling in the bays I saw eels, sea turtles, many different kind of fish, and octopi. My time in Maui was amazing, but my Hawaiian vacation was not over yet. We took a short flight to Honolulu and ended up spending 4 days there. We visited Pearl Harbor. It was such an experience that I felt that I was present during this historic catastrophe. The next day my family and I climbed Diamond Head. It was a 761-foot hike up a winding path along the side of the crater of the mountain. It did take a while, but the view was unbeatable. The hard hike was one hundred percent worth it. We also went to the Dole pineapple plantation. It was so cool to have truly fresh pineapple. After the plantation we headed to North Shore beach, which is the home of the biggest waves in Hawaii. Unfortunately there were no big waves when we were there because the big waves usually happen during the winter months. After all those things were over with, my family and I headed down to Waikiki Beach, which was right across the street from our hotel. It was lovely. The temperature of the water was so delicious. The water was crystal clear with white sand lining the bottom. My trip to Hawaii is definitely one of my all time favorite trips that I have ever taken!

My biggest dream is to become an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. I have wanted to do this since I was in 6th or 7th grade, but I have wanted to be in the military since the 3rd grade. I started off wanting to be in the Air Force but I like the dogfights of the World War 2 era, not the new technology of shooting down an enemy from miles away. Next I wanted to be in the Army because I didn’t know much about the Marines. Luckily that changed since I study the military and its history. I soon found out about the Marines and what they are about. They are the smallest of the branches, and the toughest. I do not want to enlist though because there are a lot of good benefits to being an officer, like better training, a college degree, and better pay. I want to go to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, because that is directly into the military. The Marines do not have an academy of their own because they are part of the Navy since they operate off of their ships and work with them, but as they say “The Marines are the men’s department of the Navy”. I am not entirely sure what I want my MOS, or military occupational specialty, to be yet. On one hand I would like to have my MOS be 0302 which is an infantry officer and then become a 0317 which is a Scout/Sniper. But that does not have much use outside the military. My other option is some form of a 6002 or aircraft maintenance officer, which is a mechanic and that is what I am interested in doing after the military. So right now I am making sure I get good grades and stay in good shape so I can make it into the academy and I am also practicing my shooting skills so that I can make it to Scout/Sniper if I choose to do that.

This last New Year’s I had the opportunity to spend it on a cruise. My family and I went on a Disney cruise through the Bahamas. This was our second cruise and just as memorable. Although we did not get to do as many things as we had originally planned to do, I will never forget this trip. Swimming with dolphins, swimming with sting rays, and parasailing were what we had wanted to do, but unfortunately the weather had other ideas. One our first stop at, Cast Away Cay, is an island that Disney owns themselves. Some activities we got to do were snorkeling, swimming, and other random activities like hermit crab racing! Although I did not participate in that activity I did snorkel and swim. It was a unbelievable amount of fun. After this stop we were out on the sea for an entire day. The ship had 12 decks! Each deck was different, my favorite deck was the top deck, or deck 12. There were 2 pools, a hot tube, free food and unlimited ice cream! One of my absolute favorite things about this part of the ship would be the inner tube slide. This slid wraps around the whole upper part of the ship and has little random dips in it. At night the slide would light up with colors and it was stunning. After that day we stopped at Nassau in the Bahamas. This is where Atlantis is located! My family and I got to swim with dolphins here, the water was freezing, even with our wetsuits! Even though it was cold in the water, the dolphins were beautiful and I will go into the water again if it means reliving this experience again. After this adventure we went back to the Atlantis waterpark and walked around and went on the famous slide. Just so you know, the slide everyone sees on television is much less impressive in person. It was a lot smaller than I had been expecting. It was still a ton of fun though! The cruse than began our journey back to Port Canavaral in Florida. We stopped at Cast Away Cay one last time before our long trip back at sea. While we were about half way back, the New Year’s countdown began. It was an incredible experience and I will never forget all of the people and the music that played that night. Once that night ended, we all went to bed and as soon as we woke up we were back in Florida. Once we were all off the ship and in the car, our lovely 23 hour drive home began. But, that’s another story.

My summer was the best summer i have ever had. I spent a lot of the time hanging out with my Aunt Sisie because she was leaving for Africa the first of September for a year. We did a lot of fun things together. Like we went ball room dancing for the Tango. Which was a lot harder than we thought but we eventfully had the hang of it. We also went to the fair together with my cousin. Me my cousin and my Aunt went to are first rodeo there. The rodeo was a lot of fun, there where clowns and cowboys.

This summer was a really great summer. Over the summer I had my 16th birthday. I had a little sweet 16 party with my family but I think the best part of turning 16 was what I got for my birthday. I got a car! It is a red Isuzu, I’m so excited to drive it, and it’s like my baby. When I first saw it I was so excited, the day I got to bring it home was the best! Something that I really wanted to do was wash it, I was so eager to wash it and make it shiny. I cleaned the whole thing inside and out and made it pretty. After I did all of that to my car, my dad had told me why the bumper was almost completely ripped off of it. He told me that the car was my cousins when she was 16 and it needed a lot of work before I could actually drive it because she had got into a crash and basically destroyed it. When my dad told me that I was so disappointed. Now my car just sits there with all of the pieces to it laying next to it waiting to be fixed. I am so eager to finally get to drive and have that little bit of freedom, all I am waiting for is my car to finally be finished for me. It seems like it is such a long time to wait before it is done, but eventually we will get it finished and I will be able to drive my baby and have that little bit of freedom that I have been waiting for all summer.

I remember this one time in winter when I was two years old, and I slipped on a patch of ice and the fall caused me to break my own leg. Since I was only two it did not take much for me to break my leg. Supposedly after I broke my leg I was crawling everywhere because I could not walk.

Family, to me, is one of the most important things in the world. You can do almost anything and they will not turn away, they will only turn to help you threw a hard time or to show you the right way.

When I first heard about geocaching I thought it sounded stupid, but after we found a few we became addicted. I remember the first one we found, it was a bison tube in a little tree at the YMCA in St. Joseph, by the parking lot. Since we have started we have found more than 400 of them and moved 10 trackables/travel bugs. Sometimes they are big other times they are small. Some are creative, like a hollowed out bolt on a bridge. Others are just a big Tupperware container out in the middle of the woods. Some of the most creative ones I have found include a little container with a penny glued to the top and pushed into the ground by Meijer's, a bird house at a park, and a mail box out in the woods. We have done some heavy bushwhacking a few times to get to a geocache. This August we took on the 31 days of geocaching challenge. The challenge was to find a geocache every day of August, we successfully completed it. I have even hid a few geocaches of my own. I try to make my hides unique and keep them maintained, one of my hides is a camera housing that is mounted on a wood fence at my parents security business and to make it more harder I put a lock on it and hid the key near by. One time when we were out geocaching we found a Munzee and wasn't sure what is was so I looked it up when I got home so now we even try to go find them. A Munzee is basically a QR barcode that you scan with your phone using the Munzee app. We have also found a lot of new trails and cool places. I can't wait to go geocaching again!

The fair was so much fun! I was so ready for it. One day I saw on facebook that they needed vlunteers for the "Farm Bareu", so I told my best friend if she wanted to help out, she immediately said yes! So we talked with Jennifer, the lady in charge. we got signed up. We picked a thursday for two hours. We were both excited! I had never volunteered so I was very very anxious knowing what I was going to do. When we got there she explained our job. Kids were going to enter the maze. My friend had to be in the entering door receiving the kids and explaining what they had to do. Kids had to answer some question based on the maze. The maze was about a farmer named Joe and all his different fruits, vegetables and animals. I had to be at the exit asking them the same question they had to answer on their own in the maze. If they got most of the questions right, I would give them a goody bag. And some kids really didn't know what to answer but I still gave them one. That's how nice I'am! Althought some kids just went for the goody bags but it was ok. It was very amusing. I was entertained a lot on how little kids were interested in all the activities there. Afterwars we stayed to get on the rides. At the end my feet were exhausted. But on return Jennifer gave us a lunch bag that said " Berrien Spring County Youth Fair" it was very cool. Also a free pass for the fair and a certificate and she also told us that we were invited to have a pleasant pancake breakfast for the upcoming week. Unfortunly I was unable to go. But the good thing is that I was able to help the community. I'm always motivated on helping others. This was a very good experience. Hope next year I can help out more!

I’ve been seating in front of my computer for fifteen minutes, and I still have nothing to write about. I read everyone else’s journal, and I still don’t know what to write about. What can I say? I’m not a fan of the first day of school either. My summer was great. I found out about geocaching like two months ago, but I have never actually done it. It’s kind of weird that everyone can read what I’m writing. I have nothing else to write, and I have 212 words to go. I’m nervous for Algebra. I don’t like waking up at six every morning. My grandpa is currently watching Britney Spears videos on TV. HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME! I’m laughing out loud right now. He changed the channel to Animal Planet. What a drastic change! I love my grandpa he’s just awesome. When I was little, as most of you already know, I lived in Mexico. In Mexico, as most of you probably don’t know, people don’t care to fix the streets when it rains or when it snows (yes people it does snow in Mexico). Well anyways whenever my grandpa took me to places in his truck he would go faster when he saw that there were batches coming, and when we passed them the whole truck would jump up and down. One day he got a flat tire doing that. It was funny. It’s funny how this journal entry went from school and not knowing what to write about to my grandpa and Britney.

My summer was a lot different than the normal ones I usually have. The normal summers are mostly sleeping in and hanging with friends most of the time. This summer was different because I had pom practice every other day in the morning and I wasn’t used to getting up so early in the morning and working out, I mean it wasn’t that bad after the first couple of weeks. Something else I did this summer was go to pom camp. Camp was so much fun, it also was the longest three days of my live! We were nonstop going till the time we woke up till the time we went to bed, those three days seemed like three weeks, no joke. The girls at the camp were all really nice and fun to be around, on the last day of camp we got a bunch of the girls and made a vine video in the hallway it was a ton of fun. This summer I also had my birthday which was a ton of fun, I had some friends come over and we watched a movie and swam. I think the last three days of summer were the best because I got to spend them with my boyfriend Collin, celebrate my nephew’s 3ed birthday, and preform at band shell for Memorial Day.

My summer was great. I got to do a lot of things I’ve never done before like sail and water ski. Although most days were spent sleeping in and lounging around the house this was one of my favorite summers. When I wasn’t busy being lazy I would go downtown and hang out with friends. I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet a lot of new and amazing people and that’s why I feel this summer will be one of the most memorable ones. As the summer seemed to fly by I began to dread the thought of the first day of school. I expected to get boring monotone teachers but to my surprise I like all my teachers and all of my classes this year. I made sure to get all of my required electives done 8th grade and freshman year so I could take the electives I actually wanted. One of those electives is Tech. Exploration in which you do auto shop, welding, and drafting. I wasn’t expecting to get this but I’m glad I got it this year because they are adding all new computers for drafting. Anyways my birthday is in 4 days so I’m excited for that! I still have to take my road test though so hopefully I pass that so I can get my license! I’m a pretty good driver so I don’t think it’ll be a problem but you never know what kind of driving instructor you will get. I’ve heard horror stories of the instructor telling you to turn right before you pass the road and other instructors that tell you to turn on “No turn on red” and automatically failing you if you do. But I’ve also heard stories of really nice instructors so I just hope I get one of them.

Hey Mrs. Carr! This last summer was a phenomenal one for me, it started with the band going to Florida and marching and then ended with the BC youth fair where I exhibit dairy cows. My 16th birthday came a few weeks after, at the end of August, were I got a new desktop computer and was allowed to start using my Ford. Though it is lamentable that I do not have my license, while at least for me maybe not to others, as I have not had the time of late. I plan on acquiring it with the next two weeks. The Ford, that will become my car to use, is a Ford Expedition, Eddy Bower Edition, and while it is almost as old as me, still has a great leather interior and is in great shape. The Ford has plenty of room to move things on the inside and can be used to haul our trailer. The lonesome downside of the car being its MPG, but thankfully gas is not something I personally have to pay for yet.

My summer has been...average I would say. I woke every morning at 7:00 to run. Not because I have to, but because I want to. I want to be able to finish under 17:30 for a 5k. Running is like a way to get rid of all the stress and problems of life for me. Just being able to run beside your friends and have a conversation about anything in the world. And to have the greatest coaches in Mr. Buschlen and DJ keep pushing you to be better, or even to have a friendly chat with them, is just awesome. Being able to have meets where you run your heart out and still have other teammates even from different teams congratulate you when your done is just amazing. I've played football, baseball and basketball and none of them even come close to how difficult cross country is. Cross country doesn't have a ball or a bat you can use as an objective, there's nothing. No motive at all. It's just about as hard mentally as it is physically. I first joined Cross Country because I like Mr. Buschlen so much as a teacher in 8th grade that I wanted him as a coach too. But Cross seasons go by fast, so you have to enjoy it while it lasts.

If you ever need a book to read, read Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. It’s a book I read over the summer that really made me think. It’s the true story of Chris McCandless and his inability to satisfy his wanderlust and refusal become part of normal society is amazing. Growing up as a resourceful, dedicated, and slightly unorthodox teenager in the suburbs of D.C., he had a restless soul that I believe many other teenagers possess. Chris had the courage to break out of the domestic shell suburbia creates. Most of us aren’t brave enough to do that. His wild and dangerous story of self discovery leads him across the country to eventually end up in the uninhabited Alaskan wilderness. A series of unlucky and reckless decisions unfortunately resulted in his death, but Chris’s story was not forgotten. Krakauer has written an excellent account of McCandless’s journey as well as the stories of several other wandering souls trying to get away from the poisons of society, including his own. All of them stories of young people that just needed to be completely solitary in the wilderness, and according to them, to find themselves within the wild beauty of nature. These are young people from all over the country and throughout time that all seem to have the same complex of getting away. Some may say they are just kids running away from problems they are either too lazy or afraid to face. This may be true in some cases. Although in many others I really believe these are the stories of people that had the courage to pursue the undeniable adolescent urge to break away and experience life in its rawest form. To take insane risks and discover things about yourself you would have never known otherwise. To rid yourself of the filter and censorship created in suburban and small town life and just live. Krakauer himself experienced this and writes about it in this book. It’s a fantastic read that I believe almost everyone can relate to wether they want to admit it or not.

I have done so many things this summer I can’t even count but the things that best stand out were the Memorial Day service and my High Adventure with the boy scouts. This past Memorial Day was one I will remember because we had it inside and when the Veterans shot the guns my scout master and I played echo taps. After we played we had so many people come up to us and tell us how good of a job we did and some said how much it meant to them. Several months later at the end of July we went on High Adventure with the boy scouts. It started when we pushed off on Saturday and went down the river like any sane person would; I was starting to get a little bored when all of a sudden a really sharp turn came up and it almost made me flip. That’s when I noticed that the river was really narrow because of all the fallen trees and it was very twisty. So naturally I had the time of my life going down the stretch of river but sadly my enjoyment was to be short lived because the river widened and straightened out the following days. Wednesday was the oddest because our group got separated and we didn’t know where they were, I got stuck in what was called the slower group because we were near the back, anyway we somehow got ahead of the faster group and didn’t know where they were so our one thought was they were way ahead of us and we needed to catch up. That was not the case the other group was way behind us and we ended up staying at a boat launch, I thought to myself things couldn’t get any worse but the same night there was a violent thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain. Even lying in our tents we weren’t safe because we were the tallest thing in the boat launch so we had to make a quick shelter out of tarps and trees and waited out the storm. The best part about the trip was spending time with my dad since I don’t really get to spend much time with him.

There's always ups and downs about summer but most kids would agree that summer is an all around awesome thing. For me, this summer was the best so far! Why you might ask? Warner Camp is why. Warner might possibly be my favorite place on Earth. It is a summer camp up in Grand Junction, Michigan that I get to go to with all my friends. When we get there we first meet who our councilor will be for the week and this summer I had a girl named Sarah who I had never met before and for our boy group I had one of my favorite councilors, Dave Burkhard. Morgan, Mackenzie, Savannah, and Avery were all in my cabin and that was really awesome because we all brought like 6 pounds of food. So after we all got situated we went to the tabernacle and met our speaker for the week, her name was Sara too. After we met her we were allowed to go have free time, so Morgan and I went and played schism which is like volleyball but with two balls. After free time we went and had a service in the tabernacle and then went to bed. The next day was the fun day because we went tubing but the lake has a lot of seaweed in it so when I fell off the tube it felt like a bunch of fish were tickling my feet! We got free time most of the day so my friends and I went and played splat ball which is kickball but the bases are pools and we dominated. The schedule for the day was mostly the same, which means we went to the service and then went to bed mainly. Canoeing is how we started off our next day and boy was that an interesting situation! I was in a canoe with Savannah and Tessa and we started off with only a little bit of water in the bottom but in a few minutes in we had a good 3 feet sitting in our canoe. We were all laughing so hard that we kept rocking the canoe to the extent where we actually flipped it over! We had to have the life gaurd swim all the way out to where we were and pull it back. So that was definitely my favorite canoe ride ever. The rest of the week was pretty uneventful but it was still so fun to just spend time with my best friends. Returning home was the hardest part and after camp ended I knew school was coming soon. I was just glad i had that week to end my summer.

This summer was one of the best for me. I spent a majority of the summer at Cedar Point the amusement park in Sandusky Ohio. I never thought I would say this but I actually got tired of amusement parks by the end of the summer. I went there four times and stayed as long as eight days. I got to ride all of my favorite rides again and again. I had very good luck and every time I was there the lines seemed to be short and I could get on anything I wanted! The thing that I liked the most was I never got sad it was over because I knew we would be coming back, I am still going one more time this year for what they call halloweekend. All the employees dress up in Halloween costumes and they build haunted houses. I also had more funnel cakes in eight days than I have had in my whole life. I was getting so used to being there I started to feel like I lived in Ohio. I am not sure if I will ever be able to top this summer. All the rides I rode, all the people I met, all the food I ate made it so much fun I sad summer has come to an end. I hope I get the opportunity to go back next year. I enjoyed the time I got to spend with my family and I now have so many memories that I will have for the rest of my life. I wish it would never end.

I’m going to talk about a very important topic for me and that’s music. I listen to what seems to be a very unique type of music I listen to Rock N, Roll/Heavy Metal. The reason I love the music I like so much is because not to many people listen to Rock any more and some say it sucks and it’s almost dead, which it’s not it’s very alive and doing great. I grew up listing to rock from my dad and it was amazing listing to it as a kid it was a whole new word that I never knew about. I went to a consert last Friday. I got to see In This Moment, Papa Roach and Shinedown on their Carnvial of Maddness tour. What I learn from that conserty was that Rock N, Roll is stronger than it will ever. The singer said that people were saying that Rock was dying. Everyone in the crowd started to boo including me. I thought it was amazing on how many people thought that was complete bull. Rock N, Roll will stay here forever. Now going from Rock to Metal they are two different worlds metal the music is faster louder and more in your face. I hate it when people sya Metal is just screaming into a microphone which its not. They clearly have not heard Metallica (one of the greats bands ever) or Slayer or any other thrash Metal bands. The Metal music isn’t for the soft eared people. You need a strong will to listen to the power of th six string guitar or the double kick bass drums just pounding into your ear drums. In my opion its fro the strong and if you cant take it don’t talk to me. I LOVE ROCK N, ROLL AND I LOVE METAL.
